PROJECT FINGERMARKS IN PECS 2010
Even though gloves are (to different extents) a part of so many lives, one never really realizes what it takes to make a pair (-“a pair”, an axiom in this business…).
I know I haven’t, until I was invited to take part in ‘Fingermarks’.
As a jewellery-maker I regularly ask myself what would a certain object “mean” on a certain place of the body. Strangely enough, I never focused on “the hand”.
Concentrating on “The glove” drew my attention to the incredibly loaded area of the hands, and inspired me to develop objects- gloves, that express my handling this area.
In the family business SZOM –HOR, Merijn and I were inaugurated in the secrets of traditional glove making. We witnessed the great attention and care that characterise every step of this process.
Through the project “Fingermarks” I made an acquaintance with a fascinating product that combines sensitivity to trends with traditional materials and techniques, a fascinating combination! I see it as a great enrichment to my work.
Thank you so much Elizabeth, Jackie and Karin for inviting me to be a part of this project!!! Your enthusiasm and vision, combined with the careful, maybe intuitive choice of participants was crucial to the inspiring and intense atmosphere that characterized this experience.
Ela Bauer.
